You may be living in Romania for more than 8 years (5 if you are married to a Romanian citizen) and want to know what are the advantages and disadvantages of dual citizenship.
Firstly, make sure your country allows dual citizenship. Example of countries that do: the United States, the United Kingdom, Armenia, Mexico, Morocco, Israel, Iraq, Syria, Brazil, New Zealand, Egypt, Canada, Pakistan.
The EU countries that allow it are: Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Hungary, France, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Portugal, Poland, Spain and Sweden.
The advantages of having dual citizenship are:
- travel opportunities by having two passports
- access to the healthcare system of your choice
- business and professional development
- better future for your family (your child can obtain the citizenship of the country in which they are born in)
The disadvantages are the ones that you may think of:
- complicated process of obtaining the citizenship (it may be time consuming to collect and process all the documents and to prepare for the interview)
- double taxation (the US citizen pay taxes even if they live in another country and have dual citizenship)
- double obligations (the laws of each country are different and you must respect them)
